Fallen Innocence -short story Empty

She looked out onto the open and dark sea. The water was dark and cold much like her heart. Surrounding her was a light breeze in the air that made her hair fall over her tear filled eyes. She squatted to the moist sand below until she finally fell back setting on the ground, not caring if she was wet. Out of her jacket pocket she pulled out a package of cigarettes and a red lighter.

Placing it in her mouth she drew the flame closer to the end of the cigarette. Once they were touching she took a long, deep drag then let out a cloud of smoke. On the horizon she saw the lighthouse, lighting up the night sky. That was where it happened, no more then an hour before. She was still crying, she didn’t know if she could stop.

“Why?” she kept saying to herself over and over again in between drags.

Grabbing her wrist, she rubbed them gently trying to remove the stink from them. Her ribs were sore but there was no comforting them at the moment. Folding herself over, she molded her body into a tighter ball on the ground. She watched as the waves rolled over each other. The sound of the water rushing across the sand was relaxing and for a moment calmed her but fear soon overwhelmed her again when she felt a hand on her side, her night wasn’t over. It was far from it
